Daniel Shad - Biography

Daniel Bahman Shad, MPA

Board Chair, Founder, & Executive Director

Daniel Shad is the founder and Executive Director of A Beautiful You, where he serves as the organization’s lead facilitator and visionary. He meets each participant with compassion, clarity, and unwavering respect, creating spaces where healing is rooted in dignity, sovereignty, and personal truth.

He holds a Master of Public Administration with a specialization in Nonprofit Management from New York University, as well as dual Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology & Social Behavior and Criminology, Law & Society from the University of California, Irvine. In addition to his academic training, Daniel has completed overdose prevention, naloxone distribution, and safer use supply training through the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, and holds certification through California’s Strategic Prevention Framework Competency Series in prevention science, program design, implementation, and evaluation. These credentials reflect his formal training in harm reduction, behavioral health prevention, and community-based program development.

With nearly two decades of experience in nonprofit leadership, fundraising, and public service, Daniel has held roles at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE), New York City Pride, and Equality California. Across these institutions, he developed expertise in organizational leadership, systems change, and building programs that serve marginalized communities with integrity and effectiveness.

A Beautiful You was born from Daniel’s own lived experiences navigating housing instability, systemic barriers, and traditional recovery models that often prioritize compliance over humanity. Drawing on both personal insight and professional expertise, he developed ABY’s “Wholeness Over Compliance” model — a trauma-informed, harm reduction-grounded framework designed to support individuals in reclaiming agency, identity, and stability on their own terms.

Daniel’s approach integrates evidence-based prevention principles with emotional intelligence, spiritual openness, and creative expression. He is the author of Fuck Duality: Transmuting Shadows into Balanced Power, the philosophical foundation of ABY’s curriculum. Known for his authenticity, humor, and ability to translate complex emotional and systemic realities into accessible insight, he helps participants reconnect with their intrinsic worth and capacity for transformation. Whether facilitating ABY’s curriculum, emotional regulation exercises, or creative wellness activities, his approach is rooted in sovereignty, moral clarity, and practical support.

Outside of his professional work, Daniel draws inspiration from music, movement, art, and nature. He enjoys playing billiards, finds medicine in dancing—especially when it means twerking his way through an existential crisis—and embraces harm reduction as both philosophy and daily practice. He appreciates a good glass of wine, the power of laughter, and the importance of making space for joy alongside healing. These practices reflect his belief that wholeness is not built through perfection, but through presence, honesty, and the courage to remain fully human.
